Who am I?

QUALIFICATIONS

Leadership

Current chair (2nd year), Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board of Education

Former School Board vice chair, and former chair of the MSCS Academics and Evaluation Committee.

Community & Faith

Chair Greene’s faith has sustained her life-long commitment to community service. As well as being the first woman consecrated as a bishop in Memphis, she currently serves as the senior pastor of Real Life Ministries. Her faith-based initiatives include recent efforts like pandemic-related food giveaways, serving the needs of the homeless and helping the less-fortunate pay their utilities.

Experience

As a retired teacher at Snowden Elementary, Althea Greene served the community she has lived in her entire life. Now, as the current Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board of Education Chair and a NAACP Memphis Branch member, Greene would like to continue serving on the school board.

Business & Education

As an entrepreneur, Chair Greene continues to give back to the community, by constantly making donations to schools and families in District 2. Owner of Greene’s Grill and Three Generations Catering, she is a Memphis City Schools graduate, who earned her Bachelor of Science from LeMoyne Owen College and a Master of Arts from Tusculum College.

Academic Growth

Chair Greene is committed to continuing to work with the other board members and the superintendent on academic growth for students. As a district, we continue to prioritize reading and math to improve outcomes. I support additional reading assistants and after school tutors to support our students who need more assistance with those subjects.

Advocacy

Chair Greene understands the needs of students and the challenges the school district faces. When she is re-elected, Chair Greene will continue her commitment to fight for equal funding for schools from county, state and federal sources. She will also advocate for teacher raises. Greene will seek additional funding to renovate neglected schools and explore reuse possibilities for vacant campuses based on the upcoming infrastructure report.

School Vouchers

Chair Greene is against school vouchers and has publicly come out against Governor Bill Lee’s voucher program. She strongly believes this will take much needed funding away from public schools who need these funds. Although, the voucher resolution failed in the Tennessee legislature this year, the governor has promised to bring it back next year. Chair Greene will continue to fight against this proposal.
